    Description

Before WW1, wealthy German aristocrats hunted boar and stag in privately owned forests and game preserves. They wore well tailored hunting attire and carried finely made edged weapons to signify their status and position. The "hirschfanger" was the traditional German hunting sword, and used to administer the "coup de grace" to a wounded quarry. Many of the young aristocrats who owned those swords went on to serve on the Western Front as officers in the Imperial German Army during WW1. Hirschfangers, as well as the edged weapons carried by German Automobile and Aero Corps members, government officials, Colonial officers, and even children have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading Thomas M. Johnson, LTC (Ret.), along with Victor Diehl and Thomas Wittmann, to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 2008. This "IMPERIAL GERMAN EDGED WEAPONRY" WW1 HUNTING COLONIAL KNIFE SWORD REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts an elegantly illustrated dust jacket over hardcovers, and sports 326 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and photographs (mostly black and white, though many color) of Imperial German Automobile Corps, Aero Corps, and Fire Official swords, daggers, and even axes, numerous incredible "hirschfanger" hunting swords with stag handles and Damascus blades, several Colonial officer degens with "clamshell" guards, many elegant "kinder sabels" (children's swords), wonderful close-ups of maker's marks, hilt details, grip materials and wire wrapping, pommel caps, sword knots, and scabbard fittings throughout, and a plethora of other invaluable information. A beautiful example of an "IMPERIAL GERMAN EDGED WEAPONRY" WW1 HUNTING COLONIAL KNIFE SWORD REFERENCE BOOK. Now celebrating over 20 years on eBay.
